Welcome to Bakersfield Urban Backyard Hens
Known as: B.U.B.H. and pronounced "bub" because the "H' is quiet, just like our backyard hens. The "egg song" only occurs when laying and never at night!
Our goal is to support the efforts of the "City of Bakersfield Backyard Chicken Initiative" that is actively engaged in establishing a city ordinance that allows homeowners to maintain a small flock of backyard hens as pets. This simple request has many benefits. Any concerns are easily addressed with education, facts and examples of real-life conditions that currently exist. Please take an active role in sharing this message with as many supporters as possible.

POSITIVE BENEFITS
Besides the obvious, delicious and nutritious fresh eggs, there are numerous benefits to owning backyard hens:

they eat bugs: mosquitoes, fleas, termites, ants and spiders (even black widows)
fertilizer for your garden and flowerbeds
clean the yard of weeds and eat fallen fruit
lessening one's environmental footprint on our planet
food security and sustainability (self-reliance)
participation in the food cycle process (education)
they make social and affectionate pets (companionship)
stress relief
therapeutic pets (depression, anxiety, dementia)
alleviate pressures on factory-farms that produce the majority of eggs in questionable hen conditions
healthy life-style activity (hobby)
generally easy and inexpensive to care for
