Follow-up Email Pays Off ...

Councilwoman Sullivan was very supportive at the City Council meeting. At the end of the meeting she commented on working towards finding a way to legalize hen ownership for the R-1 zone. I sent her a follow-up thank you email today and she responded. She shared her phone number with me and asked if I would give her a call. You know I did. Someone asks me to talk about hens and I am there! We had a lovely chat.

On my evening walk I saw the family I mentioned a week ago who purchased chicks thinking they were legal for the neighborhood. Many people think they are legal because lots of people own them and it is a common practice to have backyard hens. Their neighbor behind them have three Rhode Island Reds. The father took me into his backyard where his son quickly joined us to show me their coop and hen run. It was clear that they were proud of the home they had built together (father-son quality time) for their family pets. The four chicks were proud as well. They kept sticking their heads through the wire mess trying to get close to us.
