I am so excited right now. I was on my evening walk when I spied an open garage with a heat light hanging from the ceiling. Maybe you know the one; gives off that red glow. A young teenage boy was standing next to it. I knew right away that he had just gotten baby chicks. It happens I know this family, their children attended the elementary school that I am the principal of. I called out to the young man and he invited me in to see his babies. He was so proud. I got to hold them. I was so happy. Soon the whole family was in the garage: Dad, Mom and big sister. We were all sharing , talking and laughing. I explain my web site and our efforts to legalize backyard hen ownership. Guess what? Both parents informed me that chickens are legal to own. I have the "actually they are not, but we are working to change that" speech down now because it has been my experience that the majority of people are under the impression that it is legal to own hens. Then, the father says, "My neighbor has hens. What to see?" You know I did. There I am in his backyard standing on a chair peering into the neighbor's yard. Three beautiful, healthy hens.
I didn't have a flier with me but I did write down the web site for them as a resource for their new pets. thebubh.wixsite.com/bubh I will drop off a flier tomorrow and one for the neighbor. That will make seven fliers towards my goal of a dozen.
Also taking place today, we held a committee meeting with four participants on the draft ordinance. Great group of people. Important discussions and learning taking place.
Finally, I spent much of my day re-purposing an old bunk bed into composting bins. If I finish tomorrow I'll take a picture and share it with you.
When you visit the web site be sue to take the survey. Get every family member take it. The data is looking really interesting and is going to be very powerful evidence to share with City Council. #henfriendlybakersfid
