Here is what I managed to get done today for the cause of backyard hens:

  1. Called Paul Johnson, Director of Planning. Left message. He returned my call and left a message. I'll call him back tomorrow or this afternoon.

  2. Called Code Enforcement and spoke with a supervisor named Billy Owens. He was a pleasure to speak with. I'll write more on this conversation later tonight so that I can give details.

  3. Emailed and called Grimmway Farms. I spoke to someone. They will forward my contact info to the right person. I have to wait to see if they get back to me.

  4. Called and emailed Cal State Bakersfield. Had a lovely conversation with someone. They are forwarding my contact information to to correct person.

  5. Passed out four more fliers. This puts me at 13, and I made my goal of a dozen in a week. One person and I talked for 20 plus minutes on the topic of backyard hens.

  6. Spoke with a homeowner in Old Stockdale to get a feel for their community's relationship with backyard hen owners. They are county and are allowed to have chickens. She gave me two names to follow up with. Her perspective was that it works great and is a benefit to their community.

  7. I located the phone numbers to six (6) feed stores in and around town. I plan on calling them tomorrow to see if they will assist by making fliers available at their stores.

You need to be taking actions if you expect change. Otherwise, status quo will be what we get. NOW is the time. #henfriendlybakersfield
