Neighbor Talk

So, I'm working on replanting a large flower bed in our front yard. My two boys made quick work of ripping out the exiting plants and one large tree stump. We are now sifting through the soil to remove the Bermuda grass that has taken over. My neighbor, two houses down, saw our massive pile of dirt and asked if he could have some. He thought we were going to be hauling it to the landfill. We ended up having extra, and I brought it to his house - about six wheel barrels worth. I asked him what he was wanting it for. He replied with pride, "For my garden." He even mentioned how he enjoys composting. This provided me the opening I was looking for. "Ever think about owning chickens? They are the natural next step for a vegetable gardener." He said "yes" and we spent the next 30 minutes talking about the benefits of backyard hens. I shared my web site with him and encouraged him to get involved with the Bakersfield Backyard Chicken Initiative.
