Dear Council Members,
This link is worth looking at. It is a recent article (9/17/2020) of Stockton, California and how their City Council just unanimously passed an ordinance for residents to have backyard hens. I share this because this is the trend all across our state and nation. If you are challenged by the minority opposition on your reasoning for supporting backyard hens, know that smart and caring people in positions of leadership are making the same decision that you are. If you are not in favor of backyard hens, please reflect on the positives that are making this the right choice for so many other cities and residents. I would be glad to have that conversation with you anytime you like.
An interesting side note regarding a connection to Stockton, CA is our City Manager, Christian Clegg, comes to us from Stockton were he served five years as the Deputy City Manager.
The article is very articulate on several points regarding why the City Council unanimously voted in favor of passing the ordinance to allow backyard hens.
Notice that the person interviewed in support of the decision is a real-estate agent. Property value of homes do not decrease due to backyard hens. There is factual evidence of this, that I can provide for you, if you are concerned about this miss informed idea. Property values have to do with the current economy, supply and demands, as well as location. Three cities with increasing property values are LA, San Diego, and Seattle, and all three allow for urban backyard hens.
Thank you for taking a moment to read this short article.
Sincerely,
