As we close out November and this Thanksgiving season, I want to take a moment to show my appreciation to the Bakersfield community for their thoughtfulness and generosity. The pictures that I have shared are a collage of gifts that people have given me this month. It does not include all of them; but you get the idea that the work we have done is appreciated. Thank you. Your kindness means a lot to me. At the last council meeting that I spoke at I stated, "Hens or no hens, I have been greatly blessed by the people I have met and the friendships that I have made." You continue to amaze me.
Many of you have reached out to me to express your disappointment in the lawsuit that was filed and that our city is now dealing with. You have made it clear that you want to continue to work with the city to assist them in any way that you can. I am behind you 100% and will be continuing my efforts and support as well. I will be reaching out to the City Attorney this week with the intent and hope to have a conversation with her regarding this topic.
If you have questions that you would like me to ask the City Attorney please let me know. Write them on the Facebook page or gmail them to me at thebubh@gmail.com. The City Attorney has been honest with me regarding what she is able to discuss and what she cannot comment on. I have come to respect her professionalism, integrity, and character.
Let me remind you that the city voted to approve backyard hens. The lawsuit is a temporary delay, an obstructionist attempt of a small minority of individuals who are upset over the legal, transparent, and correct process that took place. Our large and ever growing community of Bakersfield residences, that support the ordinance amendment and the right to legally own backyard hens, have a right to expect the City Council Members to follow through on the majority vote that legalized backyard hens. Once the Hail Mary, last ditch effort to halt our progress (lawsuit) is overturned and found in our favor the city has an obligation and duty to undue the delay of the legal passage of the amended ordinance.
I will be writing and sharing more with you during the month of December regarding steps and actions that we can and will be taking to hold the city accountable to the majority vote made to legalize backyard hens for the R-1 zone.
Stay tuned, it's going to heat up in December. You are going to want to be part of this historic and memorable grassroots movement. Be a participate and someone who is moved to action so that you can share with family and friends for generations that you were involved in something great - improving the "quality of life experiences" for Bakersfield families, neighborhoods, and children.
