We had a wonderful Zoom meeting tonight. Thank you to those of you that were able to attend. I shared the positive phone conversation I had with Councilwoman Sullivan. She is 100% for backyard hens. She has reviewed our proposed document and believes it is reasonable and should be passed as is. We still need to convince other Council Members. Continue to write emails. Do this tonight or tomorrow if you can.

Please read the attached Proposed Ordinance. If you are able to attend the Wednesday, August 12th, 3:30 City Council meeting, it would be helpful if you familiarized yourself with this document. Our game plan for public comments portion of this meeting is as follows:

1. If you are disappointed with the workshop packet make one quick, clear and concise statement that expresses your disapproval. ("The workshop packet that has been presented to you this afternoon is disappointing because it did not provide a balanced explanation on lot size requirements.")

2. Do not waste your time on being negative and upset. Use the remaining time to communicate what it is that you think is fair and reasonable.

3. A general statement of, "I support backyard hens" is fine. Informing the Council Members of the benefits of backyard hens is fine.

4.However, if you are going to comment on specifics (maximum number of birds, minimum lot size, permits, setbacks, etc.) then please familiarize yourself with the Bakersfield Urban Backyard Hens "Proposed Ordinance" document. We do not want to send a mixed nor confusing message to the Council Members. ("Council Members, it is fair and reasonable, based on Bakersfield's current pigeon ordnance for the R-1 zone and the current chicken ordinance in the R-S zone to allow backyard hens without a permit required because that is the practice with both of these examples.")

5. Stay positive. Show the Council Members through your actions that you are respectful, responsible and mature citizens.
