Hello backyard hen supporters. The Legislative and Litigation Committee that was held on Tuesday, September 8th went well. We have entered the next stage of our grassroots movement to work with the city of Bakersfield to amend the city ordinance. We no longer have to convince the Council that it is a good idea. We now need to show them how many supporters we are. You need to be active and make this happen ... or, it will not. Here are a few points and observations from the committee meeting:
We have momentum, and on September 23rd a proposed ordinance will have it's first reading at the City Council meeting. Plan to attend and state that you are in favor of backyard hens. This is important. Mark your calendar for September 23rd. All you need to say is, "I support backyard hens. Thank you."
Councilman Gonzales and Councilwoman Sullivan are in favor of backyard hens. Councilman Parlier was slightly not in favor. These are the three Council Members that make up the Legislative and litigation Committee. Councilman Parlier stated that he has had some constituents share with him concerns. If you are in Ward 7 you need to let him know your position on backyard hens. His cell number is (661) 496-5476. He has shared this number and it is on the City's webpage. It is ok and expected that you use this number to contact him. If you live south of the Valley Plaza Mall and somewhere near Wible Rd. and S. H. St., all the way down to Taft Highway, you are probably in Ward 7. Call him and be heard.
Our topic is getting attention. News media, TV and talk radio, are starting to pick up the story. As there is more publicity and attention given to the topic of backyard hens it is important that you continue to stay positive and clear on the message: "Backyard hens are reasonable, manageable, and enhance the quality of life experience for Bakersfield residents."
There is overwhelming support for backyard hens in our community. The opposition is the minority. However, this is politics, and if you are not active and do not do the following, we will lose all of the traction we have gained over these past months. Please write City Council Members at City_Council@bakersfieldcity.us and attend the September 23rd Council meeting (either at 3;30 or 5:15, TBA).
Working with our government in a positive manner is reaffirming that the system might work. Citizens. Democracy. Working together respectfully. America. However, do not underestimate our opposition and take action so we cross the finish line first.
Finally, during this entire process I have met so many wonderful people. People from all parts of Bakersfield. People outside of my normal circles. People with common interests and beliefs. I am confident that I will meet many more before this is over. Thank you Bakersfield community and Friends.
