Tonight I wrote Councilwoman Jacquie Sullivan. Here is my email. I titled the subject line "Jacquie Sullivan - Backyard Hens"

"

Dear Councilwoman Jacquie Sullivan,

" ... (I wrote information about myself.) ... I share these things with you to establish that I am a contributing, caring and invested member of our great city.

Please take a moment to visit the Facebook page “City of Bakersfield Backyard Hens” and the web page “Bakersfield Urban Backyard Hens” at:    thebubh.wixsite.com/bubh . I am the creator and manager of this web site. You will find factual and educational information regarding why so many cities in our nation and state are allowing single resident homes within city limits to own a limited number of backyard hens. Many people in Bakersfield are reaching out to me with questions, needs, and a willingness to assist with changing the current city ordinance that prohibits hen ownership. While on the web site please take our survey. I have a blog posted there that is documenting the process of trying to work respectfully with the city government of Bakersfield that you might also want to view.

It is my understanding that several years ago you were in support of backing an ordinance to allow backyard hens. Disappointingly our city did not move forward with this action at that time. In many people's opinion the city should have because backyard hen ownership would have enhance the quality of life for the residents of Bakersfield. There is so much support and interest currently with this same topic.

I would appreciate and gladly welcome you to reach out to me to discuss this topic further. I can make myself available to be on a city committee to provide insight and answer questions for those tasked with the responsibility of discussing why we should consider making backyard hen ownership legal.

You can reach me through my web site or email mail me at thebubh@gmail.com. I look forward to the possibility of partnering with you in collaboration to change our city's ordinance.

Though there are numerous benefits of hen ownership, the data from the web site survey is showing the the three most important reasons for backyard hen ownership are: food security concerns, a desire to have a pet that is entertaining, easy to care for and inexpensive and, companionship to assist with mental health issue such as loneliness, anxiety and depression.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,"
